In our family, we like to work hard to we can play hard. During the week, life keeps us busy with school, home management, activities, meetings , errands and work among other random things. After learning about prioritizing my time I realized that while I really love a super clean home I have to set a little more realistic expectations. That doesn’t mean I have lower expectations it just means I have to shift my focus on what is important.
I don’t know about you but if my kitchen and counters are messy I feel like my world is a big fat mess. But if my counters are clear then I can breathe again and all is okay in the world. My mommy/home manager guilt is appeased by seeing that when anyone, including me, walks through our front door, everything is tidy and in its place. So, after lunch, I put my kids down and give myself about 10 minutes or so to get my front room in order so that I can peacefully and guiltlessly start my work. And then after naps we can just play! So with only ten minutes, where do I start?
Start in the most visible room.
First, I start in my living room. Why? Because the kitchen takes me the longest. I want to look around, as I tackle the endless dishes, and see a nice tidy room. It is more psychological I know but it keeps me going! Also, it is the room that people see when they come in my house.
Put the clutter away! Out of sight, my friends.
First things first, declutter! Pick up random toys, clothes, papers and quickly put them in its place. Or at least its general vicinity if you only have 10 minutes. Ha!But seriously it makes a huge difference when there aren’t a bajillion drawings all over the kitchen table and rainboots scattered like confetti.
Dust away. Get those smudges and fingerprints off glass.
To clean, I use Pledge® in all its lemony scented goodness and tackle the dust that irritates my kids’ asthma. (I picked up my cleaning products at Fred Meyer as I get my groceries and peruse the 60% off toddler girls’ clothing rack) Make sure to get in those table crevices! From there, I clean the glass using Windex® Crystal Rainbecause unfortunately glass may be clear but because of that you can clearly see dust and fingerprints on there constantly.
Next, I make my way to the dining room. My kids usually eat lunch on the dining table for some reason. They eat breakfast at the kitchen counter but maybe they like spreading their messes to the whole upstairs- maybe? I clear the table using Pledge® Multi Surface Rainshower (works on wood, yeah!) Are you seeing a rain theme here? Seattle is rubbing off on me- ha! I wipe up the table whilst polishing it up a bit. I love products that feed my multi tasking addiction. I dust the buffet table and hutch and clean the glass that has my fingerprints on it- I know- even adults make messes.
Wipe counters. Don’t you love an empty counter?
Finally, I end up in the kitchen- the most highly trafficked place of all. I leave the worst for last. I do so so that I can look out into the other rooms and see my progress. Again, it is to soothe my psyche. I clear the counters of any food or random clutter. Then, I put the dishes that are out away, put any dirty dishes in the sink and into the dishwasher. Usually it is just dishes from lunch so it doesn’t take very long. To finish up my quick 10 minute makeover, using the Pledge® Multi Surface Rainshower, I wipe up the marble counter. Ta-da!
It may not be deep cleaned but it sure looks clean to me!
While the rest of my house may not be up to par, at least the front room is and it sets the whole mood for the rest of the house. That 10 Minute Makeover has me feeling productive as a house manager, lets me work in peace as a graphic designer and blogger, and frees up time for me to be a mommy and spend time with my little ones- things that are high priority on my list.
Another thing I love- sales. Kroger and its affiliates (Baker’s Supermarkets, City Market, Dillons Food Stores, Fry’s Food And Drug, Gerbes Super Markets, Harris Teeter, Jay C, King Soopers, Owen’s, Pay Less Super Markets, QFC, Ralphs, Scott’s, Smith’s, Fred Meyer, and Food 4 Less) are having a Buy 4 Save $4 Mega Event for Pledge® on 11/10-12/27 just in time for welcoming your holiday guests with a neat and tidy house.
