Did you know that one in five children in America live in households without consistent access to adequate food? When I hear statistics like that the statistician in me (you know the one that took a Psych stats class in college- and got an A- hand clap emoji here) questions it. But then the mama in me doesn’t care and thinks no child should have to worry about their next meal.
As I sit here nursing my 3 day old baby (!!) I can only think of how I would do absolutely anything for my baby – like endure each painful latch on, sore and cracked nipples, several feedings at night, etc. Or as I watch my little ones munch on their lunch only after what seems like forever trying to prepare something all 3 different picky palettes will eat…We, as mothers, try to do our best with whatever circumstances we are given. To know that there are children out there, at least 4-5 in my own child’s classroom as the statistic states, that do not have that access to quality foods is extremely sad especially when I don’t know who they could be. Some may not say anything or show it, but it is happening. The good news is that there is something we can do about it! The Albertsons Safeway family of stores will be having a national Hunger Is campaign taking place September 1st through September 30th, 2015 to help aid in the relief of childhood hunger in America. This program is designed to raise awareness, volunteer hours, and funds that will improve health outcomes for hungry children and their families.
There are two ways to help the Hunger Is program. One is the “Donation Campaign” at the register where shoppers will be asked by cashiers while checking out if they would like to donate to the Hunger Is fundraiser. The other way is to purchase a participating product and that earns a meal for hungry kids in our community neighborhoods. It’s a win-win.
So as I sent my husband to grab some food that would be easy for us to make once my Mom left (and took her delicious cooking with her) I felt better knowing that my purchase would be helping another mother feed her child. And you can also help by going to your local Albertsons or Safeway stores and purchasing for your family and helping another one, too!
