I bet you guys are feeling it, right? Family picture time- the pressure to beautifully present yourself. Only because you have to how off your family when you send out Christmas cards! Every year, no matter how much I prepare, I am always the last one to get ready. Usually I am finishing up my makeup and hair in the car. I would venture to say that the mom usually is the one making sure that everyone’s clothes are pressed, hair is in place, face is clean and practice smiling (real smiling not forced, toothy and awkward smiles that kids do).
I would love it if someone would just take care of me that day. Someone to do my hair and makeup. I never know how much to put on since everything looks a little different on camera. Luckily, I found out about an at-home stylist platform that will do just that. You go to Vera Beautify (the platform where stylists sign up and you can see their work) and see if there are local stylists near you. You fill out a form to let them know the services you are interested in getting done. You will then receive confirmation of the date, time and stylist that will be visiting you.
I had the lovely and punctual Jessica Freitas come to my home to beautify me while my kids were downstairs watching a show. She is a professional hair stylist as well as a professional make up artist. They came up half way through and just hung out because they were so curious as to what was going on. Jessica was so gracious with the interruptions which is really important to me as a stay at home mom. She quickly set up her work station on my counter and got to work after she asked me some questions on my preferences with makeup and hair. I wanted a natural look with a new and fun lip color and my hair to have some loose curls. Jessica, being the beauty expert, did just what I hoped: a more polished look with a fun lip color- one that I was a little nervous about but ended up loving!
What I loved was all the mixing that was going on. As a creative, mixing in order to create a different color/texture is in my blood. That purple-ish lipstick was not a particular shade but one she made up so I could go as plum or maroon as I wanted.
Jessica and I chatted like old friends. She made me feel comfortable and beautiful- even before anything was done to me. I had to get up several times because my kids needed help with something and she patiently waited and chatted with me and the kids as I helped them. She didn’t make them seem like a burden which is a plus side to having an in-home service. If I were at the salon (not that I ever would take two toddlers into a salon!) this would have been a disaster ending with tears and most likely getting kicked out.
While Jessica is no longer living in Seattle, she is in NYC ready to beautify anyone for Christmas parties, family photos or just a night out on the town. However, there are lots of other stylists in the Seattle area that I will most definitely be calling when it comes time to do family pictures. A little help from the professionals doesn’t hurt plus it would force me to get ready first and result in feeling confident when it comes down to the insanity of family pictures.
So what are the benefits?
1. No need to coordinate schedules with a babysitter. I usually go to a beauty and hair salon maybe twice a year. Life is just too hectic to go more than that. I would have to find someone to watch two of my kids for at least 2 hrs + travel time.
2. More financially economical-mostly. It of course depends on the services you are getting. Hiring a sitter + paying for the services + gas adds up quickly.
3. Saves time. It is much easier to schedule a two hour block (hair + makeup) than it is a 3 hr one. I would have to add the extra hour for travel time to and from the babysitter as well as to and from the salon.
4. Comfortable and casual atmosphere. I am a homebody and am most comfortable in my own home. My kids could roam around as they pleased (as long as they didn’t get into her stuff) and wouldn’t disturb anyone.
