I love everything about fall: color of the leaves, warm sweaters, fall fashion, General Conference, apple cider, pumpkin picking and of course, pumpkins! I don’t remember carving pumpkins as a child (not really a part of my Latino culture) but I remember starting the tradition when I got married about eight years ago. Every year since then, we have gone to pick the perfect orange and round pumpkins ready to carve something awesome to decorate our front porch. Along with carving pumpkins, we got together with our extended family and happily chatted while we ate some yummy fall treats. Everything about this activity brings a smile to my face. Everything is better with family.
This year we hosted our Pumpkin Carving Party in my home. My kids could hardly wait to start! They saw all the templates they could choose from: spiders, dragons, goblins and more. We had all the Pumpkin Masters tools we needed to have a fun carving party- one even the kids could enjoy.
The adults were able to do a little more challenging templates while the kids chose a dragon and a spider. My boys really wanted to do it themselves so I just taped the template and let them go at it. Granted my 2 yr old just stabbed the holes on the template; he had a lot of fun doing so! The kid carving set contains safe tools children can use. I, of course, supervised but was comfortable enough with him using it on his own, not like he would actually let me help him anyway. It even contains plastic eyes you can insert in the pumpkins to make the pumpkin even cooler. My 5 year old was able to trace and cut his dragon template for the most part. He got a little impatient so I helped him finish it. You should have seen his face as he punched out the piece being cut out. He thought it looked like the Batman sign- his favorite! His favorite part? The X-treme Strobe Light! He could watch that thing all night.
Some of the adults (ahem, Ricky) didn’t want to get their hands dirty while others either used templates or made up their own pumpkin faces. Using the templates frees up the pressure of being super creative. It is already done for you so why not use them? You can get these carving kits at Walmart, Target, your local grocery, drug, or craft store.
I don’t know about you but my children created some masterpieces! Maybe too good for the Pumpkin Masters Carving Contest. Just share a pic of your carving via Instagram or Twitter with #PumpkinMasters2013. Or submit via the Facebook app or send via email to: email@example.com to enter for the chance to win one of six prizes, including $5,000 for the Best Pumpkin.
And to help you out with those carving skills, here is a giveaway for a Pumpkin Masters carving kit! I will pick a winner October 15th- plenty of time for carving pumpkins!
