As I worked on styling my bedroom, I realized I needed some cute books to put on my nightstand. If you know us, we have enough books to start a library. And you would also know that my husband would keel over if I bought one more thing for our home. Plus, I always feel better about reusing our things and making them pretty and not just accumulating stuff.
As much as I believe that “it’s what’s inside that counts” I also like pretty things that coordinate with what I already have. With too many colors on the covers that clash or just make it look cluttered and busy, I decided to give these books a little makeover. So I updated the old books’ cover so I could finally have pretty books with even more beautiful words inside.
This may be the easiest makeover ever. Really. And I feel almost silly sharing this but I wish I had thought about it before! Let’s paint all the books. I did while I watched some Drop Dead Diva- don’t judge.
I applied 2-3 coats of acrylic paint using a foam brush. Then I doodled the titles with chalk markers. Even if you don’t think your handwriting is pretty enough to grace the cover of your favorite books, use it. There is beauty in adding your personal touch. And then I just applied some washi tape to the spine.
Easy, right? Worth it- maybe. I am only displaying a handful of books so to me it is worth it. And it may be worth it for you if you can’t go out and buy a whole bunch of beautiful coffee table books at one time. Also, I am a bit (ok a lot) of a sentimentalist and some of these books have meaning more than just the words written by the author- but feelings and hopes from a younger self. This is a way to preserve those remembrances and books that you just can’t let go yet and even share them with your children. Sometimes kids need to know we were young once, too!
