DIY: GLAMMED UP GOLD STOOLS

DIY-ikea-stools-beforeThere is nothing a little spray paint can’t fix, right?! Here is how I made these boring counter stools into a glam addition to my kitchen.

I was getting a little bored of these drabby stools so I decided to take my handy gold spray paint and makeover these babies. It was so easy! I just unscrewed the seat and back and went to town. I only had to do one coat and then a few touch ups. It is hard to see gold spray paint in the sun so I had to wait until it got a bit darker to see what spots I missed. They were ready to sit in that night. Ikea has since discontinued these stools but here is a bar stool that could work…although these are beautiful as is. And if I could buy any stools I’d get these gold stools or this acrylic stools.

I am in love.

DIY-glam-ikea-stoolsDon’t they look a million times better and more elegant? You would never know that both cost me $5- right? Gotta love yard sale sites. And IKEA.

DIY-ikea-stools-batman-cameoOh yeah, for those of you that don’t know, Batman lives with me. No big deal.

I do want to share a little tip/secret weapon for those that aren’t spray painting fanatics. This Can-Gun1 2012 Premium Can Tool Aerosol Spray has changed my life- mostly my pointer finger’s life. It makes spray painting so easy and makes it go on pretty evenly. And my hand doesn’t cramp up after a minute of pressing down on that teeny tiny nozzle. If you plan on spray painting even just once, invest in this. It is worth every penny. All seven hundred of them. I also love Rust-Oleum 1910830 Metallic Spray, Gold, 11-Ounce and have used it in several other projects such as my Gold Nutcracker Stocking Holders. I just love this thing as much as chocolate. That is a lot. Or as my son (aka Batman) likes to say, “I love you as many people there are in the world- that’s a lot right, Mom?”

If you aren’t a DIY-er, here are some stools that I am crushing on. Maybe for our next home?

And if gold isn’t your style, I like how these were made over using these basic stools.

    1. Thanks, Rita. I know, right!? Sometimes it just takes a little something to make a huge difference. Thank you for stopping by.

    2. Thanks, Rita. They looked pretty cheap and boring before but I love them now.

  2. They look fab! {www.thepinkzipper.blogspot.ca}

    1. Thanks, Hollie. P.S. I love the “sofa of your dreams” that you posted!

    2. Thanks, Hollie! My kitchen needed a little pick me up 🙂

  3. i was thinking of doing this to my IKEA chairs, so glad to see it all done. Now I am def going to do it thanks for sharing!

    1. I’d love to see how they turn out, Jesse!

    2. OOo please share them when you do them!

  4. Brenda! I love this idea. How have they held up since? Does the spray paint come off very easily?

    1. It’s worked out amazingly. The paint has not chipped at all. And it has gotten daily use- out kids and our neighbors kids love to come over and play with it.

    2. Thanks, Alacia! My previous response isn’t showing up on here for some reason! They have held up amazingly well. My kids sit on them everyday for lunch and I’ve had to wipe them down several times and they look as good as new.

      1. Thanks Brenda! I am pumped to have found this as I have been wanting to do something like this for a while. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. I love this idea. I will do it as well with my IKEA chairs. I have the same bar stools and they look ugly in this boring grey. I want it glam as well. I live in the Netherlands. Can you give advice what kind of spray is good to take so it doesnt stick and bleed or so? {www.mahalolena.com}

    1. Thank you, Lena! I just used the one in the picture: Rustoleum Metallic Gold. You have to spray the paint about 30 cm away. If you get too close it will start to bleed and you will have visible drip marks. I am not sure what is available in the Netherlands but that is the spray paint I used. I’d love to see what you do!

      1. Here it is 2015 and I just saw this! What suggestion would you have for transforming my standard counter height Winsome Wood oak-ish look stools? We are just finishing kitchen remodel.

        1. Hi Linda! Sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve seen some pretty fun transformations on wood stools and it just depends on the style you are going for. One of my favorites is from SNAPcreativity.com and she put a gold tip on the legs and used a fun bright color to paint the stools. If you don’t want to commit to a color (like me!) I would paint it a neutral like white or light gray and use gold to accent it to give it an elegant look. You could use gold on the legs or the seat to give it a two tone color block look. I’d love to see what you come up with! You can also email me if you have any other questions or have a specific look you want to achieve.

    1. Jackie- that nozzle saved my life. Nothing can get away from me now- gold spray paint for everyone!

  10. […] I found these skeleton garlands at the Dollar Tree. I am not a huge fan of the way they looked originally so I decided to glam them up a bit. Seriously, is there anything gold paint doesn’t make a million times better? I painted them (trick is to paint the front first starting with the legs, head and then body) and since they were already attached to some twine all I had to do was hang it up. But the OCD inside of me made me switch out and alternate the black and white ones. I know it is a problem. I do love how it turned out though! And you can’t beat only paying $2 for both garlands. I love the dollar store. And gold paint. I may need an intervention because I am painting everything in sight gold, like these stools. […]

  20. Hi Brenda! I absolutely love your projects. Do you find it necessary to add a layer of clear gloss to your projects — after you’ve spray painted them (the stools above)? Or does the spray paint stay on just fine w/ out it? Thanks so much!

  21. These are fabulous! Thank you so much for sharing! Bummed that IKEA doesn’t carry these white ones. What would you suggest painting the black stools (that have the silver legs)? Just don’t care for the dark top and bottom. Thanks so much!

    1. Thank you Jennifer! I would use the Rustoleum spray paint for plastic. You could spray paint the tops white or any other color (magenta, navy, emerald green!). I think the black and gold would look so elegant though. Have fun with it and please share what you decided on- I’d love to see it!

    1. So glad to help! Seriously, spray paint is a DIYer on a budget’s best friend.

  32. Thank you soon much for this inspiration. I will do this this weekend. Kind of numbed that IKEA doesn’t have that exact stool, but they do have it in black. Thanks again.
